Happy Summer Everyone!
It is an exciting time of year finishing school and getting ready for summer vacation. It is also a time of transition. I know I was feeling a bit sad saying goodbye. Everyone in the class worked very hard this year and I am very proud of every single student. This class was a very kind, caring, and respectful group of students who openly welcomed and embraced new classmates and were generally sad to see any students moving away. Any adult who came in to the room was welcomed and made to feel part of the class. The slide show we watched on Tuesday showed so much great learning and friendships with in the class. It was a bit long but so hard to edit as I remembered so many moments and they all represented great learning and memories.
I hope everyone has a fantastic summer! Thank you for the kind cards and gifts. If you were not here on the last day reports cards are at the office for pick up. The photos on the website will be taken down in a couple weeks. I have attached the class photo that I printed and went home in case you would like another.
Please know any important information about your child has been passed on to best support them. I do check my emails occasionally over the summer if you need anything from me.
Enjoy some family time and a break from the school routine!

I can't believe this is the last full week of school. I am going to miss everyone!
We have an Aboriginal Celebration tomorrow morning at 9:30. The whole school is meeting out in the back school field to dance. Everyone has made a connection to a local animal and will do a traditional dance together.
I have gone through all the photos that have been taken this year and made a slide show. We are planning on watching it Tuesday June 28th in the afternoon. It will begin at 12:50 when lunch starts and is about 45 minutes long. Everyone welcome to come and watch.
We will also be cleaning all of our items out of the class this Friday. Please bring a reusable bag to school to carry items home.
Calendars will also be coming home this week. Please sit down together and write in special family dates. They are very excited to be able to follow their own calendar and have worked hard to complete them. Some months do not have a drawing. They were either away that day or we did not do that month. They can draw a picture once the month comes or finish a picture at home.
If you haven't already please return the Alice Lake field trip form.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to help out during the last 3 Wednesday field trips! Ninga was a definitely a big hit. The PAC needs volunteers to help with a concession for Sports Day next Friday June 10th. If you are able to help please contact Rose Mackenzie [email protected] or the PAC. It would be nice to run a concession during the day but I believe more help is needed.
Your childs Sports Day colour is listed below. The morning of June 10th is dedicated to different physical activities outside. It is nice to try and dress in the team colour for that day and to dress for the weather. It is always a very fun day with the whole school.
We will be creating a special card for a special person next week. I am sure that many will choose to do a Fathers day card. Due to the classroom community a specific fathers day gift/card will not be coming home from school. Information for you as I know this is something that is often done at school. Thanks for your understanding.
I sent home the last scholastic reading catalogs. Please return for June 10th if you would like to order. The students work hard all year and I know routines change dramatically over the summer but it is important for early readers to try and read every day to maintain their reading levels. The scholastic books offer some affordable options. Of course the public library is also a great area to access books over the summer and I believe they run some great summer reading programs also for those interested.
Please check important dates as there is a lot going on from here until the end of the year. You will start to see some materials coming home. When the opportunity presents its self try and sit down with your child and have them try and explain what they were learning with the different items sent. These are great items to review over the summer as well. It is important to be able to explain learning and thinking. As hard as it can be try and have your child do the talking and try not to add or finish their thoughts. A lot of learning comes from explaining ones learning and making mistakes during the oral language part is a key step to learning more and making connections especially with language.
Sport Day Groups
Red - Linnaea, Bayan, Justin, Jordan, Sebastian
Blue - Maura, Jazmine, Cody, Tyler
Green - Trinity, Layla Z, Marcus, Taran
Purple - Rylee, Layla R, Hayato, Lucaz, Mahtab
Black and White - Saylor, Evie, Mackenzie, Hayden, Aiden

Our second Ninga field trip is tomorrow. We leave the school at 11:10. Please bring an extra snack, water bottle, and wear clothing for the weather. It is also our early Canada Day Celebration so try and wear red and white or something Canadian. If volunteering for the field trip please meet in class at 10:50.
The Hug a Tree Program came to the school on Monday. Please ask your child about what they learned. If outdoors and lost what they should do? Everyone received an emergency blanket and whistle. These are to be used when spending time in nature (hiking, camping) and only in an emergency. A great program run by Search and Rescue.

We are heading to Save On foods tomorrow afternoon to look at food pricing in real life. We looked at flyers today to get a sense of looking at dollars and cents and some are working on rounding to the closest dollar amount as a math strategy. Hot Lunch orders due tomorrow. A paper form went home to day for those unable to order online. Please return for tomorrow.
We have started a spelling word unit for students who have mastered sight word lists. They are in charge of practicing a list of words from many different option s and testing each others to move up spelling lists. Some students are working on sight words and lists have been sent home in folders to practice at home.
This Friday is dress like your favourite Super Hero.

Hopefully the kids will be able to bring home some of this learning over the next couple of weeks.

I was away for a couple days last week at a professional learning opportunity in San Diego. It was a wonderful experience. Was even better when I returned to a lovely note about the class. Ms Polos said they were great at listening, cleaning, doing their tasks and helping her out. Made my heart happy!
See everyone Thursday I hope.

We have had a great week back. Tomorrow is our Gondola Field trip. Please make sure to wear running or hiking shoes, bring a jacket, water bottle, hat or sunglasses, and a large lunch with 2 snacks all packed in a backpack. The weather looks like it is going to be great. Parents who are volunteering please meet in the class at 9:20.
Welcome Linnaea to our class! We challenged ourselves to beat our long distance running goals today. Everyone met or beat their last running time. We are trying to pace ourselves for 20 minutes and increase our laps. We are going to compare the distance to running to places in Squamish. Could you run all the way to Alice Lake, the library, Brennan park, ect? We will be practicing at least twice a week.
Next Friday April 15th is a pro D so plan for no school. Hot Lunch orders due April 13th. All upcoming dates (I know of) are listed in the Important dates page. If you have any questions feel free to email me [email protected]

What a busy week. I was so impressed with everyone's puppet performance this week thanks for those of you who were able to come and watch. They all worked hard and we spend some time reflecting on their learning and the process. It was a popular project overall. The concert was wonderful! We kept busy right to the end of the week with exciting things all through out the school. Check creating dialogue to see some of what we were up to. I hope everyone has a wonderful break and a well deserved rest (no more lunch making and run out of the door routines). I know my own son is looking forward to spending some family time together. Look forward to seeing everyone eon April 4th!

Last week before a well deserved break for everyone. We are lucky to have a 2 weeks off and are back on April 4th. A reminder to please return the field trip form and payment this week for our Gondola trip on April 8th. Unfortunately the full payment is still needed even if you have a season pass. We have registered for the education program and the ride up is complementary with the price. Have heard wonderful things about the educational programming.
We will be presenting our puppet shows on Wednesday at 1:30. Due to lack of technology access we are going to show them live instead of a filmed version. All parents and siblings are welcome to join. Everyone has worked very hard on their puppets and shows.
Spring concert is Thursday at 6:00. I will be in the room at 5:40. We are the last performers and are students in our song so will dress up in our fanciest attire.
Don't forget to wear green on Thursday for Saint Patrick's day and Friday is Twin day and Hot Lunch.
Justin's birthday is this week and he is going to air house on Friday the 18th from 3:30-6:00. He has invited anyone in the class to come and bounce with him. I'm sure he would like to see some of his classmates.

We had a very busy and productive day today! Please check creating dialogue and ask a question about the day. I was away for 2 days last week and both notes from the teachers who came in had fabulous things to say about the class. Was very nice to come back to. We really have created a welcoming classroom community.
Melissa from the Squamish Academy of Music is working with our class once a week for the next 3 weeks. We will be performing a song on March 10th with all the other Kindergarten Grade Ones and Twos. Time to be determined for show. I will let you know as soon as I know.
We have started our puppet projects in class. The students are designing puppets and then making them. We will be creating a strong character and then writing and performing a story/ play with them. They are excited about this and we hope to record the performances. We will be working on this up until Spring break and will be inviting you in to watch their performances at some point.
Report cards go home on March 4th and I am busy writing you about you about all the wonderful learning your child is doing. As always please email me if you have any questions or need to meet up with me. [email protected]

Please bring in 100 items of your choice into school. Can be anything (grain of rice, macaroni, pennies, beads, etc). Please guess before counting together how much space it will take up. Bring on Friday morning sealed in a zip lock bag.

We will be celebrating valentines tomorrow afternoon about 2:00. It will be a simple affair to hand out cards and enjoy each others company. Please remember to include one for everyone if bringing cards to school.
Oral Language is a large part of the grade 1 and 2 English Language Arts curriculum. It is important to be able to clearly communicate thoughts verbally. This is a skill that takes practice and like all areas come easier to others and is more difficult for some.
Please set aside some time to talk with your child every week. Notice how confident and how clearly they are able to communicate with you. Allow time for them to think about what they are saying.
Creating Dialogue is there to help you ask questions and hopefully help the conversations along. Here are some extra questions about school that you can ask that will hopefully generate longer conversations. I have told the class that you may be asking some of these questions so they should be prepared to answer them with details.
1. What are your goals on your writing handprint. Why do you have these goals and what part is easy and what part is hard?
2. What game do you usually play in the morning and who do you play with?
3. What Math games do you pick and what are you trying to learn with the game you pick.
4. Do you always have the same partner? Why or why not? Does this help you learn?
5. What were the goals with the yellow balloon game and was this easy or hard for you. Why?
It is shown that when children are connecting the learning that is going on during the day at home that they are more connected and keen to learn more at school . This will also allow you to gain insight into how well they are doing at school and how well they are able to verbally communicate.
AS always if you have any questions feel free to email me or stop by [email protected]

February 4th
A class list went home yesterday for valentine cards. If you are bringing cards please include one for everyone in the class. We will have a small celebration on Friday February 12th.
There is a fundraiser going on every day at lunch raising money for the refugee family coming to Squamish. A ticket is 25 cents and could win our class a cooked lunch from the Howe Sound Secondary culinary class.
Please check to see if a black pair of slushy pants came to your home by mistake. They went missing form the class and have Layla's name written on them. We are also on the look out for a grey took that belongs to Mrs Hitzman.

Family Tree Project went home on Tuesday. Please try and spend some time with your child and fill it out together. Return by Monday the 25th. We will start to map all of our family connections on our world map next week.
A reminder to send hot lunch money in if you ordered on line. Also a reminder there is no school Monday Jan 29th. My last note had a typo and it said the 27th. We have school that day :).
On Thursdays we have started joining Mrs. Barlas's, Mme Lapp's, and Mme Gregoire's classes in the gym for Math games. All the students will be paired and working on math skills close their level and playing a game called Terminator. We plan for this to happen every Thursday. We hope that it helps us extend our classroom community further into the school by making new friends and sharing experiences together. Of course working on math facts and strategies together as well.
With the rain it helps to have a change of clothes at school, especially socks. It is expected that the students go outside and get fresh air. We discussed areas to go and ways to be outside to minimize our clothes getting soaked but that it is up to them to make these choices.
I am away at a meeting tomorrow. Ms G will be teaching the class.

Unfortunately the Eagle field trip on Thursday has been cancelled due to low eagle numbers. Looks like the snow is leaving us and the rain is back. Having an extra pair of socks and even pants in backpacks is helpful for the really wet days.
Hot Lunch can now be ordered online. A form will went home with all the information. A copy of the notice is below.
Scholastic flyers went home last week. I noticed some great phonics reader sets available for the beginner readers in the class. Please send orders in by Jan 20 if you would like to order.
A reminder there is no school Jan 18 and Jan 25.

If you wish to add more than the order amount to your account please make sure you clearly state this.

We had a wonderful day reconnecting and getting back into the groove of things today. Sounds like everyone had a good break. Popcorn day is tomorrow.
Home reading has started and many students have gone up a level. If you feel the books are way to hard or way to easy please send a note in and I can assess their level again.
I finally posted some photos on the photo page. Some good memories of all the happenings before the break.
January - March are my favourite teaching months as most students see great gains in their learning. We will be working hard on core skills. Please remember to check creating dialogue occasionally as many questions will be asked there. This is a good way to see the connections your child is making while in class.
As always feel free to come in or email me anytime [email protected]

Welcome December..... well almost.
Was great to check in with the parents who were able to come in last week for parent teacher interviews. I was in and out of the classroom last week due to illness and committee meetings. Hence the missed days of creating dialogue. I am hoping my voice will hold out this week!
This week is another busy week.
Popcorn Day is Tuesday. Bring $1 for a delicious bag of popcorn.
Skating Thursday 1:30 -2:30 at Brennan park. All parents welcome to join us there!
Writing Day is Friday 9:00-10:30. All parents/grandparents/caregivers/siblings welcome to come and write letters together. The whole school will be writing letters and cards. The post office will be there to mail letters. Please meet in the class for attendance and then the school is open for writing.
I sent home scholastic flyers. To receive the orders before Christmas please send back by Friday. I have added the credit card payment option. Just search my name (Wagner - Shawna) and enter the details. I get a note that your ordered has been paid.
Christmas Swag
During the day of December 8, 2016 the K-2 classes will be making a beautiful Christmas Swag to hang on your front door for the holiday season, but we need your help! Please send in any greenery (tree boughs, holly stems, etc..) that you have in your yard or neighbourhood to school before Tuesday, Dec. 8. We are also looking for donations of Christmas decorations (ribbon, bows, small ornaments, cinnamon sticks) to hang on our swag. If you can help, please come in.
Schedule: 9-9:45 Mme Gregoire & Mme Lapp
9:45-10:30 Mrs. Lapointe & Mrs. Buxton
10:50-11:30 Mme. Rolouf & Mme. Casey
11:30 – 12:00 Mrs. Wagner & Mrs. Barlas
I also added a new tab for pictures. The videos/pictures page was having a hard time loading with so much data on it. Hopefully this will help with the problem. Stay tuned for pictures to be added soon.
December is always a very busy month. I will try and keep everyone informed as to what is going on. If you have any questions please stop in after school or email me [email protected]

Reminder there is early dismissal Wednesday and Thursday this week. The bell goes at 2:03 both days.
Please sign up for interviews. It would be nice to touch base with every parent. There are a lot of time slots available and I am here until 7:00 on Wednesday. If you are unable to come during the times available email me to book a better time for you.
Animal Projects
Everyone has picked an animal they would like to learn more about. We have started by finding books about the animal and reading the pictures and words to learn some interesting facts. We have observed the animal by making I see and I wonder statements and breaking it down to observe the different body parts.
This week we will be doing our first scientific drawing of the animal and using a model from Austin's butterfly (video found in video area) to work on drawing a second and third draft. After this we plan to build a 3D replica of our animal. If you could send in to class paper towel and toilet paper rolls and small boxes like Kleenex they will be useful for the building stage. We will also be learning about the animal, its habitat, life cycle, special features and traits.

Report Cards went home today. Please sign the top page and return with the envelope. There is a schedule at the office for booking parent teacher interviews. Please call Laura to book 604-892-9307.
If you are unable to make the times available please email me and we can arrange something. [email protected]
Please understand that children learn and process in different ways. The report card is a snapshot and things change quickly for young learners. Some learn continuously while others learn in spurts and make connections to their learning all at once.
If you are interested in learning more about the competencies found on the report card I have some information that I can share with you at parent teacher interviews. The ministry of education also has this as a main part of the new curriculum and more information can be found at
https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/competencies
I look forward to interview to talk about all the great learning the kids are doing.
Have a great weekend!

I was very impressed with everyone today during our Remembrance Day Assembly. Thank you Mrs. Parker's class who did a great job of organizing it. Our class was respectful quiet and serious during the assembly. We have been talking about Peace this week and what it actually means. Some great thoughts coming forth. Remember there is no school tomorrow to remember this day and all the freedoms we have in Canada.
School photos are ready. Please check folders for information on how to access and order them. I had a quick look and they are beautiful. Really do capture each child's unique personality.
Mark your calendars for December 14 6:00 for our Christmas Concert. The theme will be Let it Snow!
Two new no school days to add to the calendar are January 29 and March 4th. The Ministry of Education is releasing teachers to learn about the new curriculum this year.
Skating
Thank you for returning the skating forms. The skates have been ordered and we are excited to go on Thursday November 19 and December 3rd at 1:30. I will send a reminder home the night before and to the parents who volunteered to come. We definitely need any help we can get on the ice . For many of the students this will be their first time skating.
Student Learning
This is about the time when questions come about how your children are doing in school. I have been busy writing report cards and they will be going home next Friday November 20th. You are always welcome to come in the class after school and see some of what is happening though.

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween weekend. The energy in the class was definitely a bit sugar filled today :). Thank you for leaving candy at home. We discussed as a class what sugar does to our brain and why its not a good idea to bring it to school.
Reminder that tomorrow is Popcorn day. Bring $1 for a bag of popcorn. Friday is also a Pro D so no school.
We started new literacy groups today. Each student has a teacher that they will be seeing 3 times a week. Nice to move around and get to know other students. Mrs Drinovz, Mrs Barlas, Mrs Brown and myself all have a group. These groups will stay until Christmas and then be changed up.
November Scholastic booklets went home. Please return by November 20th if interested in ordering.
I am currently loading more photos onto the website. Be sure to check them out together. Some great conversations can be started with a simple picture.

We had a great field trip today to the pumpkin patch. Thank you to the parents who were able to come. They did a lot of pumpkin carrying today!
Halloween
On Friday for Halloween students are invited and encouraged to come dressed in their costumes. Please leave masks and accessories at home. We will be going to the gym with all the kindies, grade ones, and twos for a costume parade and Halloween dance. The afternoon we will be rotating with all the grade 1/2's for Halloween themed stations.
Candy - I kindly ask that all Halloween candy be left at home to enjoy. We have been discussing healthy eating and the sugar does affect learning in the classroom.
The October Scholastic order has been placed. If you ordered I will contact you when the order arrives. It usually takes about a week. November flyers will be going home next week.

I am so impressed with everyone this week. We are really starting to feel like a second family. We spent some time making a list of what we want from our classroom community. Some powerful ideas and a great list was made. See creating dialogue for the list. I did my happy dance more than once this week as I watched everyone take care of each other and work hard to learn.
Scholastic flyers went home last week. If you would like to purchase books please return by Thursday Oct 22. Please make cheques payable to Scholastic Canada. Part of the profits go directly to our classroom. I will send them home every month.
Self Regulation
This week the students all picked a Self Regulation goal and I picked a goal for them. This is something we will be striving to work on everyday. I have included a bit more information and links about Self Regulaton in the parent resource page if you would like more information. These skills are very important for success in school.
We ended our day with some photos from the last month. I am trouble shooting how to get them uploaded on to the website and will hopefully get them published tonight. So watch the pictures tab during the weekend. Hope everyone enjoys the weekend and the beautiful sunshine!

Home Reading is off to a great start. The kids are enjoying grabbing new books each morning. I am continuing to assess their reading levels and some have already gone up. Please try and spent 5 minutes a night enjoying books together. If your child is an emergent reader look for words they know and support them with the harder words.
Two notices went home today. Please check the bright green to make sure information is correct and return signed. The white forms will allow me to post some of the great photos I have on the website :).
The Family Book
Tomorrow we will start the family book. Every student will have the opportunity to take it home and write about themselves and their families. We have been discussing all our differences and similarities. Share the writing responsibility and include a photo or a drawn picture. Try include a minimum of 5 facts. There are some ideas in the book to get started. It will take awhile to get to everyone. Try and bring the book back within 2 days of receiving it.
I am looking for a parent who is able to come in and read with the students. If this is something you could commit to one morning a week from 9:30-10:10 please send me an email. [email protected]

I am looking for a volunteer to help take our juice boxes to the recycler and collecting the money for our class. If this is something you could help with please email me. It would involve picking up a bag once a week and dropping the money to me for a classroom fun fund.
If you are interested in consistently volunteering in the class please email me. There will be many field trip opportunities coming up as well.
Enjoy the sunshine!

Everyone has learned everyone's names! This is especially impressive for the new students to Squamish Elementary. As promised I have a surprise to bring in tomorrow to celebrate this.
We have continued to work this week on getting to know each other and also learn about ourselves as individual learners. It is very important for everyone to feel safe and comfortable in our classroom and to understand that we are all different. This strong sense of community and feeling of success will allow us to learn more through out the year.
Take home folders are ready and will go home today. This is for passing information to and from school. Please have your child bring it every day.
The Terry Fox Run is tomorrow afternoon. Please dress for weather and exercise. There is some information in home folders.
Book Fair opens tomorrow and runs through next week.
Next Thursday is the Family Pot luck 6:00-7:00. I look forward to meeting all of you! The children will be excited to show you their new classroom. If you are unable to come please stop by and say hello if you have not already had the chance.
School picture day has been booked for October 1st.

We finished our first week together as a class. It is a big week full of learning, listening, and figuring out new routines. Please celebrate this and understand that your child may be tired.
We have been spending a lot of time getting to know each other and I am thrilled we have the year to build on the relationships we have started. Our focus for the next couple of weeks will be nurturing these relationships. The stronger our classroom community is the more we will be able to learn.
As the weather is starting to change please make sure your child has a pair of indoor shoes. It is encouraged to go outside during recess and lunch in all weather and we will also be taking advantage of learning outside when we can. Please also send in Money for school supplies if you have not had the chance.
Book fair is on next week. A flyer went home today.
Reminder We have our Family Potluck on October 1st
Hoping to receive the order placed for supplies next week and will get the home folders set up for passing information to and from school.
Have a great weekend

Welcome to Ms. Wagner's Grade 1/2 classroom website
I am so excited to be teaching at Squamish Elementary School. I have been teaching and working with students in the Sea to Sky corridor for the past 8 years. My husband, 2 year old son, and I love living here in Squamish and I feel fortunate to teach in this town. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you. The best way to contact me is by email at [email protected]
This home page is General information and the place I will post all important information. I will send out an email reminder every time I update this page. It is usually updated every couple of weeks and a bit more at the beginning of the year.
I plan to post in the Creating Dialogue page (above) almost daily. This is a space you can look at to help engage your child in conversation about all the things we are learning in class. I will try post a couple things we did and a question that we were thinking about for each day. I will try post within half an hour of the home bell. On days I have meetings and/or am away I will not post. Please note that we do a lot more everyday than what is posted. I suggest bookmarking this page for quick reference to help with the inevitable "I did nothing" answer we seem to get from our children ;).
I will post some videos and classroom photos in Videos/Pictures page. Please note that I will ensure the green privacy forms have been signed for your child to be included in pictures and that I do erase the photos. Pictures only stay posted for about a month.
I will update and post all important dates as best I can in Important Dates.
I will include articles and videos in the Parent Resource page. I have many articles and if you are interested in any information on any topic please ask as I can most likely forward you some of my favourites. This is the page that tends to get neglected but I will try my best. There are some great videos and a couple articles already posted.
My goal is that this website is viewed by both you and your child. I hope that it helps strengthen the home school connection.
